Vermont Race Weekend - Jan. 24, 2022

Vermont Race Weekend

After a year off from races in the Green Mountain State, NEMS is finally heading back to Vermont for an exciting weekend of races. How exciting? Well, over the course of four days we will visit both Stratton and Suicide 6. Stratton will host a Super-G training, 2 Super-Gs (both on Speed Series), and a Giant Slalom (Janeway Cup). Suicide 6 will close things out with 2 Slaloms. That's 5 races and a training session. But wait there is more....

As a bonus, we are adding a Super Combined race as well. The Super Combined will consist of the 2nd Super G Race at Stratton + Run #1 of SL Race #2 at Suicide 6.

To recap this weekend will have the following:

  • SIX (6) scored races, over
  • FOUR (4) days, at
  • TWO (2) venues

We have many racers who have been to both Stratton and Suicide 6 and know what to expect. We also have many new racers that have never experienced the thrill of a race on North American at Stratton, or a Slalom race down the Face trail at Suicide 6. I would encourage everyone to read the Race Info Sheets over carefully for both Stratton and Suicide 6. There are important details on registration, race fee discounts, and other tidbits that you should be aware of.

I would also encourage racers to download the Team App and follow New England Masters Ski Racing. We post info sheets, start lists, and race updates that you want to be aware of.

Lastly, there will be an Zoom Info Session held on Tuesday at 6pm (see below for login details). This session is open to everyone and is optional. The session will be recorded in case anyone is not able to make it.

Suicide 6

A Day for Bill McCollom

As many of you know, we unexpectedly lost a legend in Masters ski racing in June of 2020. Bill McCollom played a huge role within our organization. He wasn't just a racer. He was the guy behind the scenes putting races together and trying to make sure everyone had a great experience. His passion for the sport of ski racing was truly unmatched by anyone and we were fortunate enough to have him in New England. Unfortunately, last season the NEMS community was unable to properly pay tribute to Bill.

This Sunday NEMS will return to Suicide 6 for 2 slalom races. Suicide 6 was Bill's home mountain and he loved bringing the NEMS circus there. He would set the course, race, and then head to the bar for a pint (or two) where he would share stories of the history of his mountain with friends.

Following our races on Sunday we will spend some time honoring the man, the myth, the legend. Bill's son, Eric, and his grandchildren, will be in attendance, and would love to hear any stories our racers have about Bill. If you knew Bill I would encourage you to join us for our celebration of his contributions to Masters ski racing. We should be done racing around 2pm, so feel free to stop by the mountain, and join us.
